Getting around in Tromsø

Public transport in the city of Tromsø is organised by Svipper. On city buses it is not possible to buy bus tickets with a credit card when boarding, we recommend installing the Svipper phone app or buying physical tickets at the few ticket booths, more information is found on the Svipper website.

Tromsø is bike-friendly but there are no public bike rental systems, several outdoor shops offer to rent standard and electric bikes. It is also possible to rent Ryde scooters in the city.

Most locations on the island are within walking distance and additional locations within the conference (e.g. icebreaker at Tromsø Museum, excursion at Botanical Gardens) can be reached within a ~30-60 min walk from the city centre. It is also possible to reach Tromsø Museum by the numbers 33, 34, and 40 buses.

Travel information

Tromsø is a well-connected city despite its location in the European Arctic. Several options exist to travel to Tromsø:

  • Tromsø airport is located on the island of Tromsøya, within a few kilometers from the conference venue and most accommodation options, various companies offer direct flights.
  • You can reach the city center from the airport either using a local bus (number 40 or 42) Svipper (note that the bus stop is located behind the parking garage) or a private company such as the airport express coach Flybussen. You can also take a taxi from the airport to your hotel such as Tromsø Taxi, Din Taxi, or Taxi 1.
  • Land travel is possible by bus from Narvik or Rovaniemi, note that there are no direct trains to Tromsø
  • From Narvik (230 km away from Tromsø):
  • Bus tickets from Narvik can be purchased through the local bus company Svipper,
  • From Rovaniemi (600 km away from Tromsø):
  • Bus tickets from Rovaniemi can be purchased at Matkahuolto,
  • Night trains to Rovaniemi can be booked at VR,
  • Tromsø is accessible by ferry from Bergen, tickets can be booked through Hurtigruten and Havila.

We have a lot of weather in northern Norway. June is one of the driest and warmest months, with a daily mean of 9.4°C, but some variation around that mean explains that anything from 25°C and sun to some snowflakes can be expected. We recommend adjusting packing plans based on the local weather forecast found at YR, and will be in touch shortly before the conference if exceptional weather is expected.

Accommodation

June is peak tourism season in Tromsø because of the midnight sun. We recommend booking your travel and accommodation as early as possible.

The conference venue and most hotels are located in downtown Tromsø on the main island, for convenience we recommend booking accommodation on the south-eastern half of the island. Several hotels and many private accommodation options are available, be aware that restaurants and take-away food are rather expensive in Tromsø: which meals are included in accommodation prices is worth keeping in mind.
